Long Point World Biosphere Reserve isn't just a conservation area it's a living record of 10,000 years of ecological history on Lake Erie.

Long Point, Ontario

Long Point juts 40 kilometres into Lake Erie from Norfolk County's south shore, creating one of the most important migratory bird stopover points in eastern North America. Each spring and fall, hundreds of species funnel through raptors, warblers, waterfowl making it a destination for serious birders from across the continent.

UNESCO designated Long Point a World Biosphere Reserve in 1986. The designation recognizes the area's exceptional biodiversity the marshes, forests, beaches, and open water that together support wildlife populations you won't find at this density anywhere else on the Great Lakes.

For Norfolk County, Long Point is also history. The area has been settled, farmed, hunted, and fished for centuries. The Duck Club era left an architectural legacy of hunting lodges along the inner bay. The commercial fishery shaped Port Rowan and Port Dover. Indigenous peoples used the peninsula for thousands of years before European arrival.

If you've never walked Long Point Provincial Park, put it on your list. Go in May for the warblers. Go in October for the hawks. Go anytime for the light on the water.
